“Someone I once knew wrote that we walk away from our dreams, afraid that we may fail or worse yet, afraid we may succeed” (IMDb, 2000, p. 1). This is a quote from William Forrester in the movie, Finding Forrester. The quote is saying that one does not conquer their dreams without courage. Finding Forrester is set in the busy city of New York. Here lives the teenage boy, Jamal Wallace, and an unlikely mentor named William Forrester. As a dare, Jamal breaks into Forrester’s apartment, and accidentally leaves his backpack there. When Jamal goes back to retrieve it the next day, the writings in his bag have been revised. This sets up the relationship between Jamal and Forrester, who grow closer together by sharing their love for writing. Also during this time, Jamal is being scouted by a private school to play basketball for them. He courageously accepts the offer, and leaves his current friends behind to pursue his dreams. Jamal has to make choices during the championship basketball game and self-consciously learns to be brave. This shows that no matter where one is at in life, an individual can overcome difficulties by displaying courage.

The film, Finding Forrester, proves this statement to be true. This is seen throughout Jamal’s life academically and athletically. Out of all the difficult circumstances that he is put in, he overcame them with courage. This is also seen in Forrester’s life when he steps out of his comfort zone to help Jamal with tasks that he would never do. Jamal and Forrester both positively influence each other to create a more courageous environment. An individual may also use the courage within oneself to overcome obstacles like Jamal and Forrester did.
