The element of courage plays a great role in the story of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Courage is one of the heroic qualities that Montag possesses. Throughout the book, he shows that he has the courage to do the right thing even though the trouble he could get in for it are very severe. The spark that started Montag’s “fire” or started his thoughts against the firemen was Clarisse, and how she asked him,

Montag soon after asking about why they burn books they get a call to an old woman’s home. Montag then later tries to convince the lady to get out of the house before it is burned. Montag also lingered inside of her home after she had pulled out the match, which, could’ve been lit and thrown on the kerosene, burning him alive in the home.
One major thing Montag did at the woman’s home and did many times prior, is that he took a book from her home and hides it under his arm. If he were to be caught he would be severely punished and would lose his job and would also be hauled off to jail. Another point in the novel where Montag shows courage is that he reads in the subway in front of many people. This is clearly an act of courage because reading or owning a book is illegal.
Finally, in the climax, the final thing Montag does is that he kills Beatty and destroys the hound because they become a major threat to him. He then flees from the police and escapes town. Montag then follows Faber’s plan to follow the railroad and find and live with the homeless people who walk the tracks. Montag talks and trust these men with his whereabouts and with the trust that they won’t turn him into the police. The conclusion of the book after the bombs drop Granger lets Montag lead the
