In his fight against Grendel, Beowulf showed great strength and a surprising amount of courage. He fought fearlessly against the beast. Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you, be strong and courageous? Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (New International Version) Beowulf shows great amounts of courage as if he believed the Lord was on his side, although one may object that he does not get his courage from the Lord but from himself. He finds his courage in pride of himself and boasting in his accomplishments and power. Likewise, when he fights Grendel’s mother, his power is evident in every move he makes. Grendel’s mother is a potent beast who cannot be easily defeated. She is upset about the outcome of her child and goes to avenge her son’s death. A Christian’s strength comes from knowing God has a plan and from realizing He knows everything that has happened, everything that is happening, and everything that is going to happen. Believers take courage in the Lord and in His ways and they believe God’s purpose is better than human’s plans and problems. Rick Warren states in his book The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth am I Here for? that “Trusting God completely means having faith that He knows what is best for your life. You expect Him to keep His promises, help you with problems, and do the impossible when necessary” (Warren, 2012) God wants people to realize they need Him in life, and they cannot live life to the fullest without Him. God designed people to want that intimate relationship with Him, and that is where trusting in God comes into play. To show true Christian courage, one has to trust in God with their entire being. Christian courage is hard to find in the general population because people do not want to submit to God as their authority. Society does not like the idea of being under someone or something.
