The Great Gatsby has frequent representation of themes and symbols; however the greatest theme is the corruption of the American dream. The American dream is an illusion of an idea that you can start from the bottom, and become something great. People who had a big house, fancy car, and lots of money were perceived to be a symbol of the American dream. This dream caused corruption and destructiveness throughout many American lives. Myrtle, Gatsby, and Daisy have all been corrupted and destroyed by the idea of the American dream.
Myrtle became so obsessed with social status and wealth. The mindset caused her to become a lying deceitful person. She cheated on her husband and was willing to anything it took to achieve the dream. He offered all that he could to Daisy. Gatsby promised her safety, protection, and love. But since he didn’t have much money or the social status, she decided to marry Tom. This caused gatsby to chase after that style of living, he wanted to do all that he could to try and win over Daisy. He became a bootlegger to gain wealth and bought all these lavish items thinking Daisy would come running back into his life. But, when gatsby realizes that daisy is not going to leave Tom, he was devastated. The American dream for Gatsby doesn't seem so great after all.
For Daisy, she had been living the American dream her whole life. She came from big homes, butlers, and wealth. After dating Gatsby, she realized he had no money and she immediately left him. The fact she loved him didn’t seem to matter. Daisy decided to marry Tom because he could give her the life she had always known. For Daisy, the easy life was always her first choice. So, choosing Tom was the easiest thing for her and the best way to keep her American
