How does Her display and relate to ideas of convergent media?
This essay will examine the various types of convergent media found within the film Her (Spike Jonze, 2013) and attempt to evaluate its take a close future version of convergence. Combining the new with the old, the analogue with the digital or the high culture with low culture, all of these are examples of possible convergence. There are three main kinds of convergence. Firstly there is technological convergence, where digital code is the underlying reason for media convergence. The main idea of technological convergence is that as technology advances and evolves, new systems will perform a multitude of tasks independently. An example of technological convergence is the evolution of television, the internet and video on-demand services. Since the advent of online video services, like YouTube and netflix, a shift from scheduled broadcasts to on-demand services has taken place. For a long time television content was on a much higher quality than internet content, and they were considered to be two separate forms of media. Sites such as netflixs started to bring the high quality content from television and allow uses to watch it on-demand. In order to stay relevant television companies also started to offer on-demand services that you could watch on your tv, without having to switch devices. Now in order for the internet services to remain level with television they had to start producing high quality content too. So now both internet services, like netflix, and television companies are both high quality content produces and on-demand video services. Some people who found their start on the internet are now transitioning to television also. Grace Helbig rose to internet fame with her youtube channel (graciehinabox) where she has amassed over 2 million subscribers, she is currently hosting her own chat show on E!, this is an example to the two media types attempting to become the same thing.
