It is heavily implied throughout the play, primarily in act one, that the Putnam family has many unsettled conflicts with the various people of Salem, and that they would falsely accuse these people of
Gurevich 2 witchcraft if they had simply had the chance. This is stated when Giles Corey accuses Thomas
Putnam’s Grandfather of constantly “willing land that never belonged to him” (Miller 32). It was also heavily implied that Mrs. Putnam was jealous of Rebecca Nurse who hasn’t lost a single child, while she herself had only one surviving out of six. This was stated during a session where
Rebecca Nurse mentioned that the town needs to “look to god” to find the answers they need, to which Mrs. Putnam exclaimed that blaming themselves was a ludicrous decision because she has
“but one child left of eight” (Miller 28) and that it wasn’t the solution.
These events fueled Giles’s prime suspicion that the Putnams had other larger reasons for going about blaming innocent people of witchcraft. To resolve this conflict, Giles Corey
