F. Scott Fitzgerald uses conflict of Man vs Society to describe Mr.Gatsby, by telling us that during his parties his guests start rumors about him in his own house. The rumors start because Gatsby isn’t around often during his own parties, The first party Nick goes to he is told by people attending that they heard “Gatsby has killed a man” or “He was a German spy during the war”. (48) These examples show that people don’t really know Mr.Gatsby and are going off of what they heard from other people. And that they are making more rumors by repeating it to other guests. But later on during the night Nick meets Mr.Gatsby unknowingly until they begin talking about the war, and they look familiar to one another “Your face is familiar,” he said politely.
