Summary: The major conflict in Soldier's Heart is the conflict of war. Charley fights the Rebels because he is from Minnesota, and people from Minnesota fight for the Union, while people from the South fight against it. War is described in strong terms throughout the book.

Story: Charlie Goddard wanted to be in the war but, he didn't know anything about it. He was only 15 when he entered the Civil War. He wanted to get out of the house his mom said “NO” but, Charlie said ”I’m just in your way” so his mom couldn’t stop him. When he went to Fort Snelling he thought “war was fun but first he needed to train for war”. When he got to the training post he thought “this is easy” but, when he got training it was hard for him.
