The author of this novel, J.D. Salinger, starts off the book by setting a tone that puts emphasis on the severity of the case that Holden was living in. New York is a huge city that plenty of people and tourist come to visit or even live. You see a lot of people coming to New York to become famous. New York is known for there fashion. Some may say that New York is the busiest city in the country. The city is so busy that people hardly sleep. New York has a lot of attractions like the Statue of Liberty, Madison Square Garden, Coney Island, and the big apple. The people the live in New York tend to be rude. New York does not have the farms with the cows and horses. Sound like anyone we know? Holden does not connect with people. He is extremely judgmental towards almost everything and everyone. He criticizes about people who are boring, insecure and phony. If Holden was to die in this book, I do not think anyone would show to his funeral. People were not too fond of how he treated them. Throughout Holden speaks sarcastically, but also makes sarcastic statements about life. Basically, while Holden is going through life alone, he makes observations and criticizes the world around him. By him observing and criticizing, that makes him use a tough tone because he is scared and lonely. When people are normally scared, they don’t like to show it so they’ll use a tough tone to make others, or convince themselves, that they are not lonely. Also, he is inquisitive, being that he is curious about things. As a kid, and the older you get, you become curious about everything. You want to know how things and people work. How people go through life, and what you need to do to have the life you want. Sometimes, when you are younger, being curious can come off as being nosey. Let’s just say Holden was
