Examples Of Cognitive Dissonance

I am most selfish in making decisions for my well-being disregarding if anyone else will be affected. This often times puts me in cognitive dissonance, particularly when two of my values conflict when being maintained. A prime example of my cognitive dissonance is my educational/career decisions and satisfying my parents happiness in having me be in a “reputable and high earning” profession. I am currently attending at Pierce, and after I earn my associates degree this spring, I plan to transfer to a university to earn my bachelor’s degree in psychology. Although I am figuring out what to do with my degree, I know that I will take the knowledge I’ve acquired in my college experience to help me in my career as a musician. However, my parents …show more content…
I follow the phrase regardless if it’s unconscious or not “In order for you to help other people, you must help yourself.” I find it difficult for me to worry about other people’s well being when mine isn’t stable either. However, when I need additional support, I know I can rely on my family, friends, and mentors to help me lead myself in the best possible direction for me, and I will be able to reciprocate my support back to them. I find the people I care for the most, are people that not only have strong relationships built on trust, but also that these relationships are reciprocal. For example, in these reciprocal relationships I have with people we allow the exchange to bond and strengthen them. I give gifts to my closest friends on their birthday, and during the holiday season. But outside, of the gifts we also reciprocate other things that strengthen our relationships. Some of the most significant things I give back and forth with these people include time spent together, knowledge shared, emotional support, and companionship/the sense of belonging. The click in this scenario would be me giving something to my friend ( a cue like a gift on their birthday) with the whirr being that he give me something back on my birthday. This reciprocity will mostly likely happen at a higher rate if the interaction can be associated with good …show more content…
When, I’d get customers to walk in the store I'd get to know their name and when I knew they were regulars, I made sure to plant my seed and create a reciprocal relationship (many times without them knowing). I”d be knowledgeable, respectful, and easy to talk with my customers, so my relationship with my customer they’d feel more inclined to buy the shoes. If I did manage to get them to buy the shoes, I'll mention a discounted item we have in the back to give as a way to show my gratitude. This always gets them to come back into the store, and to come look for me specifically because I’ve already built that relationship with them by providing excellent customer services, and in return help my sales numbers and commision. My influence on them was the relationship I built through my role in customer service, they find a product they are interested in and purchase it. I allow them to invest even more in our relationship by giving them the opportunity to buy even more, and they have a lasting impression on the store, and myself and will hopefully be back again to continue this relationship and buy shoes from me as well. The schema in this scenario would be whether the customer decision making when it comes to buying something. The factors in the scenario include how well my representation of this store and customer service

I love your positive attitude but confused at the same time about the situation of doing your work and incorporating your supervisor work also. I can see that being challenging because it is a lot but you prioritize and made it work for the good of both. As my senior year recently came closer to an end, it became more clear that I was more unsure than ever as to what I wanted to do in life. School was not something I enjoyed and the thought of furthering my education taking random classes without knowing what I wanted to do seemed depressing. I decided I would enroll in the community college near my home in Alabama and get started on some basic classes. About a month after graduating, I was talking to my mom and she asked me what I wanted to do for a career. Still depressed and feeling anxious about the subject, I told her I really just wanted to go to cosmetology school.…

Leon Festinger’s cognitive dissonance theory revolutionized the world of social psychology. It did so by focusing on the on-going cognitions in people’s minds, particularly- dissonant cognitions. His model stated that unpleasant feelings produced by dissonant cognitions motivate us to do something to change our state. My essay will focus on the reduction of dissonance, as I noted it to be an interesting phenomena which can be done in a multitude of ways- the most convenient being convincing ourselves that our behavior is logical and does, in fact make sense.…

Besides the perspective of labor, morals and manners there is also another perspective that has affected me personally in the home seating and my education. Dorothy Smith’s standpoint theory, “is grounded by the assertion that women have devalued social statuses in patriarchal societies” (Roberts, 2015). Smith argues that men have obtained the most values and powerful positions in the paid employment. For decades men have been more recognized for either effort in the work force than women. Even though today more women are in the work force, they are still expected to come home to clean, cook, wash and care for the children.…

Issues with Identity A young honors student hardly ever chooses to sign up for all advanced courses solely by themselves and what they want. Most teenagers in high school want a social life and free time, but the academic rigors of advanced courses usually don’t allow for what a student wants. My mother, who went to Harvard and put herself through law school with a child to care for, has high expectations for me and my sister. She won’t let me sign up for a course that isn’t honors or advanced placement because of those expectations.…

What does being a good person mean to you? In life there are a lot of good morals and values our parents or friends taught us to live by. Sometimes it is hard to follow them all because we all get busy and stressed with our own lives. So I have chosen to write about the moral that I will never forget because my parents pounded it into my head, dependability. This is a moral I will take to the grave and eventually teach to my own children along with many others.…

Today businesses are extremely customer oriented. Companies are doing their very best to deliver value added services to their customers in order to retain them and while at the same time trying to acquire new customers. It is far easier for a company to retain existing customers than it is to attract new customers. Companies realise the importance of placing more emphasis on relationship marketing programmes like customer loyalty, customer retention and customer satisfaction programmes in order to keep existing customers and to turn new customers into returning loyal customers. For my Case Study, I am looking at the Boots "Loyalty card scheme programme" as it is a tool Boots use in order to build relationships with its customers.…

Human behavior is a very unique thing with many aspects to it. Why people do things and what causes them to behave the way they do stems from different theories within psychology. According to Aronson,Wilson,& Akert (2014), the overall goal is to maintain a healthy and positive self-perception. Sometimes in life we behave or do things that aren’t like ourselves and that go against our self-perception of ourselves, the feeling you get when this happens is called cognitive dissonance (Aronson et al; 2014). Cognitive dissonance is the uncomfortable feeling that succumbs you when you act in a way that doesn’t line up with your customary positive image.…
