The Code of Ethics for counseling professionals is a guideline of ethical and moral behavior. These principles are designed not just to protect the client but also the counselor. These should include but are not limited to the right of the client to be in control of their treatment. This means letting the client make decisions for themselves. The counselor should never make the client feel as if they are making decisions for them. The counselor should not do anything harmful to the patient nor should the counselor be negligent in their duties. The counselor should treat each client equally and fairly regardless of race or gender. Finally, the counselor should be trustworthy and confidential. There are advantages to having a code of ethics.
