Classism is defined as “prejudice against or in favor of people belonging to a particular social class.” (Merriam-Webster citation) Thus, classism can be positive or negative. Many people view the upper class as different people and F Scott Fitzgerald displays this when he says “The rich are different than you and me.” (Rich Boy F Scott Fitzgerald) He says this in his story because he believes the worldview of the rich is shaped differently than everyone else because they are born into wealth. While many would view what Fitzgerald is saying as a classist statement, others view it as a true statement. One that can exist but is not often seen is the attitude toward women and cleaning a house. A woman who cleans houses for a living is often seen as lazy and low class, whereas an upper class stay at home mom who cleans the house is diligent and noble. Also, when a low-class woman cleans the house the task is seen as wasted time and idle.
