Civil disobedience is an peaceful act of disobeying a law or demand of a government or higher power. Nonviolent protest has been demonstrated since the ancient Greek times to the segregation of blacks and whites to today’s media. In various literature several authors had characters demonstrate the act of civil disobedience, however, this act has also been demonstrated by real life people such as Rosa Parks and her refusal to give her seat up for a white man. Film is another way civil disobedience has been presented. Gandhi and Battle in Seattle, for example, are docudramas that were set on the topic of protest against laws placed by the government. Antigone follows in the law of the gods more than following the king’s decree. She believes that her brother should be given a proper burial only to please the gods, even though he is considered a traitor. Martin Luther King’s essay “Letter from Birmingham Jail” is the most effective example of civil disobedience. Throughout King’s letter, he gives legitimate reasons why nonviolent campaign against unjust laws is necessary. For example, King tells how Negro leaders sought to negotiate with the leaders of the economic community and promises such as the removal the racial signs from the stores were made. As weeks went by the Negro leaders realized they were victims of a broken promises and the signs remained (King 1). The Negro leaders had no other choice but to prepare for direct action based on the response from the economic leaders of the community. Also, the injustice in laws cause the Negro to have pent-up resentment and frustrations. To release these feelings inside, the Negro must march which is the reason for sit-ins. If his emotions do not come out then his actions will result into violence (King 4).
