Civil disobedience justifies Antigone’s actions because Antigone decides to bury her brother because she believes it is the right thing to do. Similarly, the actions of Dr Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Clerk Kim Davis refused to obey civil laws as a means of securing reforms. Antigone believes that the laws of the gods supersede the laws of any man, and she is willing to die for what is right, then to live life in sin in order to obey civil law. Many individuals have felt entitled to the same moral obligation and have broken the law within history.Just because something is made a law doesn’t make it right. Slavery and discrimrantory laws were once permitted, but because people decided to fight against it, these laws were eventually overturned, which shows the power of civil disobedience. Antigone is courageous and fearless because she refused to compromise her faith and loyalty. She held true to her moral obligations by obeying the gods, and remained loyal to her

Despite its ancient origins, Sophocles’ play Antigone provides a case study through which to examine issues of politics, power, sovereignty, and justice. The final of Sophocles’ trilogy “Three Theban Plays,” the first record of Antigone is around 442 BCE, during the height of Athenian democracy. The play centers around Antigone’s decision to disobey her future father-in-law and king, Creon, in order to give her brother Polyneices, who is branded a traitor and is forbade a proper burial. One of Oedipus and Jocasta’s living two children, Antigone flaunts Creon’s laws and gives her brother a proper burial. Here, once again, Antigone displays severe disrespect to Creon’s position as king when she explains mockingly that she did not know that “[Creon] had such powers to enable [the powers of the gods]” for is a mortal and will die someday, making out that his declaration will be replaced whereas the gods will be forever. However, her disrespect to Creon is established by her belief that “there is nothing shameful in honoring [her] brother” (559). Here, Antigone illustrates once again that the love and loyalty that she has for her brother Polyneices was her true and honest purpose for being defiant, not to show loyalty to the gods but to follow what the message employed: to cherish and respect family. For Antigone, “if [she] dared to leave the dead man, [her] mother’s son, dead and unburied, that would have been [the] real pain,” not death (510-512). Her desire to free the spirit of her brother so that it can be at peace explains the true reason of her rebellious…

In the play “Antigone,” Sophocles manifests Creon and Antigone's distinct conflicting values to address the issue of government authority over the people. Creon’s regard for the laws of the city causes him to abandon all other believes and therefore, he feels that all of the citizens should obey the laws set forth by him, even if other beliefs, moral or religious, state otherwise. On the other hand, Antigone holds the belief of the gods in high reverence which is proven when she states, “A sinless sinner, banned a while on earth, But by the dead commended; and with them I shall abide for ever. As for thee, Scorn, if thou wilt, the eternal laws of Heaven” (Antigone 9; Act 1). Antigone elevates religious law over the law of the state which causes her to neglect the king’s will and bury her brother’s body.…

Both Antigone and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. engage in civil disobedience in order to further their own interests. However while Antigone engages in civil disobedience on the basis of sacred or divine laws, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. engages in disobedience based on the moral rights of equality. King uses nonviolent protest to achieve his goals, while Antigone outright breaks laws set by king Creon. Also, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has a big following to his cause with a large group of people who support him, while Antigone is alone in her cause with only her family having similar beliefs to her. Antigone and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are from very different time periods than each other, which plays a big role in their intentions to disobey unjust laws.…

The act of civil disobedience is often associated with nonviolence and simple demonstrations, however, that connotation is insufficient. Civil disobedience is the refusal of individuals or a group, to obey particular laws as a way of forcing the government to change (Civil Disobedience); therefore there is no singular manner in which it must be conducted. In a comparison of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Antigone, two different approaches are revealed. Though Dr. King and Antigone are strikingly similar in their practice of civil disobedience to illuminate fundamental problems within society and government. Where Dr. King is notoriously eloquent and forthright in addressing the issue of unjust laws and oppression, Antigone allows her unreserved passion and sense of indignation to govern her actions, which underscore the significance of the error in upholding man’s law over that of the gods.…
