Christianity? “Lee is essentially a southern religious writer, one more concerned about sin and salvation than crime and punishment” (fofweb.com). Throughout the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee’s Christianity is a clear focus. This is shown by her use of examples and important concepts of Christian religion, her view of life through Christianity, and the characters actions coming from a Christian standpoint rather than logical or rational. “Although Lee uses religion/Christianity in the text to convey certain positive themes related to the goodness that can come from following the teachings of the church, …show more content…
One major part of the book is trying to get the readers to empathize with the characters. Scout Finch who is the main character is talking to her father Atticus. Atticus tells her “you can't truly understand someone until you crawl into their skin and walk around in it”. That can be traced back to Christianity "The Christian faith originated with a God who moved into our neighborhood, who 'climbed into human skin and walked around in it,' and who truly understands and connects with humanity." (Matt Litton). That is a concept of Christianity. That is a big part of the book. This means that most of the book is based off the concept of Christianity. The concept of being able to understand other peoples points of view. Harper Lee is trying to teach a lesson. Even though most of the people in the book don’t live up to those standards. Those standards were set by the Christian religion reflected in Harper Lee’s writing. The residence of Maycomb will never be good Christians according to Harper Lee. The residents do not empathize with characters. They continue to let their own biases and corrupted thinking stop them from doing so. It is ironic because the book is about learning how to empathize. From Harper Lee’s writing readers can see they do not live up to the standards of …show more content…
Scout is thinking about how she learned to read and write. ”In the long hours of church was it then I learned?” (Lee 28). Even though Scout spent so long in church she is still not a proper Christian. Scout’s education she has is useless because of all the time she spent practicing writing and reading. The way she practiced is by copying chapters in the bible. Scout had to spend a long time in church to become so an expert at reading and writing. This caused Scout not to need school. That means Scout decisions might be based off of the time she spent in church. She spent enough time there copying and copying writings from the Bible that is how she learned how to read and write. Even though Scout spends so much time in church she is still not a good Christian. The bible states “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Scout does not follow this she beats up Walter Cunning a resident of Maycomb (where Scout lives). That is not loving yourself. This is not living up to being a proper Christian. Taking quick action without thinking. Without thinking how the Christian god will perceive her actions as unholy. As actions a decided and great Christian would not partake in. Very clearly Scout is not a great Christian. Even though she spent so much time in church. This clearly shows how Scout can not live up to the standard the Christian religion has set for
