Holden fears the adult world but also does things that only adults should do,like drinking and smoke cigarettes because his parents sorta pushed him away by sending him off to schools when he was only seeking attention and comfort after his younger brother Allie died.

He hates phoniness because he feels everybody disappoints,act fake, and/or lets him down when they don’t do what they said they were going to do. An example would be the people at school like the headmaster when parents came into pencey he’ll act all nice and suck up to them when he was really mean to
