The Outsiders Essay: Bravery
Cautious people live boring un-thrilling lives, and once they have their first taste of bravery. They can’t stop because they enjoy the thrill that comes along with it. “The brave do not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all” The quote shows the life that Johnny Cade lived from S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders. S.E Hinton present the idea that bravery moves people to do dangerous things in the spur of the moment.

The first scene that revealed Johnny being brave is when he stood up to Dally when he was making Cherry uncomfortable. In the text it says that, “He started to put his arm around her, but Johnny reached over and stopped him ‘Leave her alone, Dally’” (Hinton 24). This shows us that Johnny has the

Saving the children from the burning church. The man who rode with Pony to the hospital said “I swear you three are the bravest kids I’ve seen in a long time. First, you and the black haired kid climbing in that window” (Hinton 94). The man is explaining not only were Johnny and Pony brave. Johnny’s acts of bravery at the church don’t end there he also pushed Ponyboy out if the church before the piece of burning wood fell. “The church started to crumble. Johnny shoved me towards the window. ‘Get out’” (Hinton 93) This revealed that he put his life in danger to save Ponyboy although he knew that he almost died. He acted knowing that he could die. He even knew that he could have died he also knew that the only people that could have missed him was the gang. Later in the book when he was in the hospital and they allowed the gang to visit Johnny. When his mother came around the nurse told him he said “‘I said I don’t want to see her’”(Hinton 122). He knew that his own mother would just end up telling him about the “troubles” that he was causing her. His motive behind saving the children was saving children who have a better chance for good. He wanted to be known as a hero. Not as a killer who ran from his crimes. He knew the danger and yet he acted in the spur of the moment to save the children and Pony.

The acts of bravery committed by Johnny Cade were dangerous and done in the spur of the moment. “The brave don’t live forever”. Johnny was apart of the brave. He died a hero, saving children from a fire. It is an act that can’t be regrettable. “But cautious don’t live at all” Johnny was never cautious he was taking risks. Johnny is brave, he is not among the cautious. A quote to live by “The Brave don’t live forever, but the cautious don’t live at
