Both of these character’s moment of bravery come at the same time, and it is fitting that Amir’s first instance of bravery is paralleled with that of a child. The moment where Amir and Sohrab demonstrate their bravery is in chapter 22 when Assef and Amir are brawling. Amir knows that Assef will try to kill him if they fight, but Amir knows deep down that he must fight Assef, shown when he thinks to himself “Now it was my turn. ‘All right’, I said not knowing what else to say”. This shows Amir’s bravery because readers see that although Amir is fearful and is facing immense danger, he still does what he knows is the right thing to do. Shortly after this moment, Sohrab demonstrates his bravery when he says “No more, Agha. Please. Stop hurting him”, while directing his slingshot with a brass ball at Assef’s eye. Again, Sohrab knows that he is putting himself in much danger by doing this, but he also knows that it is the right thing to do, thus proving his courage at this time.
