Maturity and Growth The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a bildungsroman. It is a bildungsroman because it really shows how the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, grows into the person she becomes at the end of the book. Katniss is a teenage girl, that is very mature and strong for her age, who goes through experiences that changes her perception of the “real world”. Katniss was once an outspoken girl but soon learns that in order to survive she would have to hold her tongue. She picks up the habit of not voicing her own opinions and only tells Gale, her best friend, about what she really thinks. Katniss, being a teenager, is outspoken by a greater force and power that makes her feel trapped. This is shown when Katniss says,

Peeta was a sign of hope for Katniss. She bonded with him too quickly and closely for her to let go.
Katniss was not completely innocent at the beginning of her story. At a young age her father died, her mother fell into depression, and Katniss had to pick up the slack. She had to hunt and kill her own food and take care of her family. This forced her to be mature. Katniss was very inexperienced when it came to love and romance. Katniss was very ignorant when it came to Gale’s emotions towards her. Katniss also didn’t understand Peeta’s declaration of love. Katniss never imagined that Prim would have gotten picked for the Hunger Games. “Her [Prim’s] first reaping. She’s about as safe as you can get, since she’s only entered once. There they were pampered, given luxurious food, and styled to train. The tributes, Katniss and Peeta, were not used to this treatment and indulged in the opportunity. When they got into the arena it was far more difficult. The Training Center was like their utopia and the arena was worse than their dystopian home, District 12.
