Bildungsroman, Hobbit Style Growing up is hard, especially the transition from acting like a naïve kid to a mature adult, and the realization of not relying on others for help but your own. Bildungsroman, it means a coming of age story. Usually a coming of age story involves a young person or kid growing up and learning about life. The Hobbit, written by J.R.R Tolkien about hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who goes on a quest with his friends. Bilbo is viewed a respectable hobbit because of his last name, Baggins. Sometimes a bildungsroman’s protagonist doesn’t necessarily have to live young. Although Bilbo’s age nearly 50 years old, he haven’t grown as an adult, naïve and unaware of how things work outside of his life, Bilbo would also rely on Gandalf and the dwarves for help, Bilbo would eventually develop him into a new person with his friends, through a series of events throughout Bilbo’s adventure. In chapter two Bilbo had his first adventure. Bilbo wants to prove to the dwarves that he has more potential than just a grocer, he can become a burglar. Through all the events that happened to Bilbo, it has all prepared him for this moment where he confronts Smaug. “Finally, it was Bilbo-alone and unaided- who had to confront the great dragon Smaug.” Bilbo showed sign of courage here because he didn’t coward in fear when he met Smaug. Bilbo’s action of not cowering in fear in the sight of Smaug, he shows us that he has matured and grown up by facing his problems and obstacle head on like a Took.
