Examples Of Being Mixed Ethnic

Decent Essays
Ethnically, I identify as being “mixed”. My paternal heritage includes black, Puerto Rican and Filipino ancestry. I have never met another individual who shares the same diverse ethnic ancestry as mine. I attend a predominately white, Jewish school where I often feel like an outsider particularly when I participate in certain after school activities. I am the only African- American on my Science Olympiad team, and often I am the only one among many teams we compete against throughout the nation. Unfortunately, I’ve had to accept this fact because no black students will join the team, despite me encouraging them to do so. However, I feel most out of my comfort zone when I am asked “What are you?”, and I realize I am surrounded by all caucasians.

In my high school of over three thousand students, there are two Muslim students; I am one, and my younger sister is the other. Needless to say, deeming us minorities would be a bit of an understatement. My elementary school years deluded me with the superficial allures of assimilation into a primarily white, Christian community. I made constant attempts at blending into my effectively homogenous school, from fabricating stories about Christmas with my family to telling my friends that I had forgotten my lunch at home (thirty days in a row) as opposed to explaining the intricacies of fasting.…

Sue et al. (2007a) also created a taxonomy of various examples of racial microaggressions, and posited how these could present in the lives of people of color. Some examples include: A) Alien in Own Land, which assumes that people of color are foreign born, B) Ascription of intelligence, which refers to labeling someone’s intelligence based on his or her race, C) Color blindness, which occurs when people deny an individual’s racialized experiences (i.e. “There is only one race; the human race”), D) The Criminality or Assumption of Criminal Status, when a person of color is assumed to have had a history of criminal behavior, and may subsequently be followed around a retail store, E) The Denial of Individual Racism, when someone tries to deny…

To the ones who believe asking, “What are you?” is a valid conversation starter, I am multiracial and proud, but to simplify my ethnicities to others when asked, I identify myself as Asian. I was stereotyped because of how we are perceived in media and society. I spent years cowering in my own skin because others made me believe I was not Asian because of the size of my eyes, the color of my hair, and my personal interests. I was ashamed of what I looked like since I was convinced it embodied who I am as a person.…

Through out the past few decades people have found it easier and easier to love based on the inside ignoring the perception of the outer traits. Biracial and Multiracial people have been on the rise and will continue to be for the many years to come. Although this has been on the rise in a positive way their is still some negative connotation which is involved usually with the individuals themselves. As absurd as it sounds it happens. Specifically when reading articles or just hearing people of multiple races speak they generally identify with the struggle to fit in to one particular group.…

The school that I attended was a primarily white student school with about one tenth of each grade being Hispanic. Our teaching staff was also primarily white with a few Hispanic teachers in the whole school. During school, we were all in the same classes. In my Spanish class, my teacher used the opportunity of having a mixed class to her advantage. When we were allowed to pick our own groups, she encouraged that the Hispanics and the white kids worked together instead of being separated.…

In this essay, I’d like to talk about my experiences of being a half Greek and half Puerto Rican girl growing up in a hispanic neighborhood. Sure, I can discuss being a woman or how greatly my race and Greek culture have influenced my life, but I chose to write about the racial discrimination and prejudices I experienced in this specific area of my life because experiences like mine do not get recognized and are hardly ever talked about. They should. I chose this topic because I never get to voice what my experiences were like. The times I had voiced them, they were met with eye rolls from people who thought I was lying and labeled my experiences as fiction.…

History affects us in ways we may not realize. It prowls up on us in our everyday lives. It sculpts the way we think, conform ourselves, and even our behavior towards other people. Unfortunately, one of the negative effects of history is, the recurring thought that “light-skin” blacks are of more value than blacks of a darker complexion. This also ties in with the belief that blacks of mixed race are more attractive than those who are not.…

The components of blackness can never and will never be defined in a single sentence. Although looking at someone's skin can determine what they look like, there is no way to actually determine who they are and where they are from.
