Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Class

Over the course of the semester, I have learned all of the skills necessary to excel in school and college. Some of the most important things I have learned were how to manage time and how to be an active reader. Before learning how to manage my time, I would easily get distracted and procrastinate but now I have learned how to get everything done in a timely manner. Also, before the course I would struggle to comprehend what my textbook said but thanks to the course, I now spend the time to reevaluate what I am reading to fully understand the material. Other helpful lessons I have learned from this class were how to take good, helpful notes and what kind of learner I am. My notes used to be quite jumbled and messy but now they are organized and follow a pattern making them easier to understand. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, myself included. I am particularly good at note taking as well as realizing the potential benefits of attending college to motivate me to try harder. My notes typically follow the teacher’s lectures but sometimes my methods vary from them when they go off on tangents or a different format would be easier to comprehend. By actually doing the work instead of just hearing or reading it, I can better learn the material. My key strengths as a learner lie within the math and science subjects because of the hands-on nature of the courses. I am good with formulas and thinking algebraically which means I have logical-mathematical intelligence. However, my limitations as a learner lie within the social studies fields and simply managing my time. I lack in the interpersonal intelligence so it is difficult for me to comprehend why others do what they do, and how they do it. I do have a hard time, though, when things are all scattered around randomly. It is hard for me to follow the information, but I am able to fill in the missing pieces most of the time (Soloman & Felder, n.d.). To me, sequential learning kind of goes hand in hand with sensitive learning so it also describes me pretty well. It was interesting to take the questionnaire and figure out my personal preferences when it comes to learning. Since I now know how I best learn information, it is going to be easier to study for exams.…

It helped me understand their position and where they were coming from a little better, even if I didn’t always agree with their opinion. I know feel that everyone will not always agree with what I have to say or what I think and I will not always agree with what other people think or say. I just have to respect, listen and consider their opinion. The group and class discussion also helped improve my critical thinking skills and communication. I sometimes find myself talking over people whenever I disagree, but in this class I had to remember to let others speak as well.…

I was also able to learn from teaching during this lesson that students can benefit from having hands on activities, or one that requires something other than sitting and listening. For example, during this lesson, the students were able to demonstrate their knowledge through movement. They were also able to choose pictures of objects from bags to determine if they were living on non-living. Having visual examples for students that also relate to them can be helpful when teaching science. The students did do a good job with listening to directions and following rules, but I think part of the reason for this was that they had many movement breaks other ways to remain focused.…

I wanted to be able schedule days to study with my classmates so I was looking to build a group of support with other students like me. Talking to other nonnative students is not always easy. It is also hard meeting with students that are nontraditional because of family and work schedules. There were also some things I was more comfortable with than others. I write better than I speak because I have more time to think about what or how to say what I need to.…

And they just make more of an impact.” This experience could be beneficial when it comes time for college students to pick a career according to Madden. I still have some difficulty with speaking, I feel like that I need to prepare my response before saying it, otherwise my answer would have some grammatical mistakes. In listening, I feel that I am now able to engage myself to academic meetings with a high comprehension. However, I still have a challenge of taking notes and arranging them. Over all, my speaking and listening now got improved, but they need to be practiced to preserve the level that I reached and to continue improving those two skills. In other hand, reading and writing also have been improved but the challenge that I still have is the time, and this more obvious in writing.…
