Authoritative Parenting vs. Authoritarian Parenting: In the 1960s psychologist, Diana Baurmind discovered four different types of parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful, and indulgent parenting that are still used today. Commonly though, authoritative and authoritarian parenting methods are often confused even though, they are both different methods that produce different results. So, what is the difference between these two styles? In authoritarian parenting, parents believe that their child should do exactly what they say with no other reason as long as they are in charge. Furthermore, the child is not allowed to question or debate the rules or consequences set for them. In addition to set strict rules and guidelines for their children, authoritarian parents allow very little verbal exchange between them and a child. When a child grows up with authoritarian parents, they tend to grow up to be often unhappy, fearful, and anxious because their parents constantly compared them to other individuals. Moreover, because their parents constantly compare them to others, they often exclude themselves from sports and develop weak communications skills because their parents allow little to none communication between them and their parents. Unlike authoritarian children, children with authoritative parents tend to grow up as cheerful, self-controlled, and self-reliant.
