V For Vendetta Authoritarianism

“The people should not be afraid of the government, the government should be afraid of the people.” These are the words said by V in the movie V for Vendetta. But how can a citizen live in an authoritarian state? How can a dictator achieve absolute control of power?

By definition, authoritarianism is a government that governs without the consent of those being governed. In authoritarian states, there is only one ruler whether it may be a king, a military leader, dictator or even a president that will rule the government. Usually, the causes of why some states become Authoritarian are that there is some violent civil conflict that is going on or it could be a by-product of a Monarchy rule. It can also be a response to the abuse of a country’s

In an authoritarian state, it asks its citizens to let go of their pleasure (whether it be personal or interpersonal), for the good of the state, however, citizens raised not having the authoritarian character will reject to make the sacrifices of letting go of their pleasure. They will deny that they exist the state but rather than the state exists to serve them better (Neill & Reich, 1994). If we look for the movie V for Vendetta, the Norsefire party made problems to the society for it to be a reason for them to turn into a totalitarian state. This is because the Norsefire party wanted to take control of Britain, and for the High Chancellor to gain authority and power. According to Thomas Hobbes, an English philosopher, that humans will go back to their “state of nature” when there is no governing body/government that would rule the people. In a state of nature, there is no political organization and someone in authority to enforce laws. With people in the state of nature, we would not be able to vote, achieve success, learning, enrich our country’s cultural achievements; in short, we would be uncivilized people of the country.

Dictatorship has many benefits yet consequences too. Some of the benefits are that it helps in social stability, discipline and order and in economic development, however, the consequences are: Dictatorship’s priority is to maintain power,

Personally, if we want stability and order in our country, maybe there are possible solutions or ways to avoid leading it into a dictatorship. A great dictator is someone who could bring fundamental change and sets a long term vision for the state. Our next generation of children wouldn’t want to see a country that is in chaos, rather a country that is on its way for change. Peace is not too far anymore to be attained but if we really want change to happen; the change that we want to see should begin in each of

To follow up my point, “ according to Fallon” the orbital cortex puts a brake on another part of the brain called the amygdala, which is involved with aggression and appetites.” (NPR, 2010). Also, I cannot agree with Hobbes on the issue of the government/sovereign being superior over the people in the social contract. I agree that Locke is right that the sovereign or government is subordinate to the people, especially in a democracy as theoretically the people make up the government so if the people are upset, it is most likely that the system has been corrupted, thus justifying a revolution using Locke’s theory, but not Hobbs. Obviously, the right to revolution is something that I agree in if the governmental system set up in place becomes corrupted. The only way that Hobbs would justify a revolution is if the sovereign/government ceases to function properly, not if the people are just unpleased with the system.…

The people who live in these countries have no rights, freedom, or saying in what goes on around them. This is because they have no democracy and their ruler has absolute power over them. If the people were able to vote like we can here in America, I’m pretty sure they would overthrow their dictator and make their country a better place. That’s why I believe that if we were to lose our political freedom it would threaten the American democracy.…

If we approve this Constitution, the government will quickly be on its way to an aristocracy. I do believe that the national government needs greater powers to deal with other nations, but I fear that security would be gained, and individual liberty would be lost. This very reason is why I am in favor of states rights instead of one central…

I think that the arguments of John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx ultimately fell short of this success because they used democracy to defend almost every point of their political doctrine and did not expand outside of this political school of thought like Hobbes and Rousseau. By failing to do this if you take away the defense of democracy to support their political doctrine then their works just become the opinions of men and their supposed utopias that they had wished to see enacted in the world instead of a concrete doctrine that if implemented could supposedly work in and even have the possibility of making society a better place. So ultimately it is in fact too easy to dismiss J.S. Mill and…

In “Harrison Bergeron” the government uses propaganda to keep its citizens from wanting to compete with each other and be their own individual, “‘If I tried to get away with it,’ said George, ‘then other people’d get away with it-and pretty soon we’d be right back to the dark ages again, with everybody competing against anybody else. You wouldn’t like that would you?’” (Vonnegut 217). The dark ages symbolize a time when people had individual talents, and how terrorizing that time was, but now it is all better because they are all the same. In V for Vendetta the government uses propaganda to hide its corruption and keep the citizens from forming their own opinions. Other countries such as America is used as a scape goat for their flawed government in order to glorify and push the government’s fascist ideas on the citizens of England, “Here was a country that had everything, absolutely everything.…

Single party state is a type of dictatorship when only one party has power over the government. It is almost same as autocracy but single party state is when a political party has the power over the government. This is a dictatorship because it shows characteristics opposite to democracy. No other parties are allowed to run candidates for election while allowing only one party to exist permanently as a political party. In single party state, there are no other parties who can go against the single party. The single party state is also able to change the rules of the state or the country so they can easily get through the policies of the country and everything they do is…

Therefore, even if Hobbes hoped for a more submissive constituent that only questions government in result to a direct threat of life, this cannot be the case in our current political time. There is no homogenous group in one society, therefore a ruler cannot truly make one decision that appeases all, they can, however, make decisions that help some and hurt others. This is when Hobbes theory on ownership for self-preservation becomes flawed. Although his way of thought has informed many governments it has also done what he hoped it wouldn’t; provide an unsafe environment that directly threatens lives. Proving that ownership cannot guarantee a free society it is only a quick resolution to a mountain of overlying issues that may possibly go…

Governments are the sole things that will make a country run smooth. When we put a society ruled by a monarchy and a society run by a dictatorship, we can clearly see the similarities and differences that define these two governments. In an absolute monarchy, the country is ruled by a family that will make all of the laws for the people, but in a dictatorship, there is only one singular person that decides the laws for the country. For both of these countries, this means that the people will have no say in any laws, and are forced to follow something they have no control over. Using sources from the internet and putting them side by side, we can compare and contrast the two governments.…

An oligarchy is where the elite hold all the power and the people have none, yes constitutional monarchies have an elite, but the royal family only has limited power and do not mandate laws. No, I disagree the United States has not developed into an oligarchy. The reason why because we the people still have voices and rights to choose who we want to represent us, the current government and political system might give off the illusion of that it is only because no one knows what they should or are doing. If the United States government has became an oligarchy it is because the people made it that…
