Audacity Audacity is the outright conviction of your moral values. ‘To kill a Mockingbird’ reveals several characters with the admirable trait of audacity. Atticus is the first character that comes to mind when you think of audacity in To Kill a Mockingbird. Through the characters in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Lee portrays varying degrees of audacity. Atticus portrays audacity in the way he raises his kids, in how he fights against injustice, and how he carefully analyzes situations. He taught Scout a valuable life lesson about being fair and trying to understand another person’s perspective before you judge them. He agreed to defend Tom Robinson because he knew Tom was innocent. Knowing the chances of success were low, he was determined to right this wrong. As Atticus and Mr. Tate deal with the rabid dog, Atticus was cautious not to fire the gun anywhere that might hit people. Although he was also nervous, even Mr. Tate asked for Atticus to “take care of it”. This shows he is respected as a trustworthy leader. Even though he is shy, his actions display steady affection and caring for Scout and Jem. Scout and Jem often find little gifts left for them (by Boo) in the hole of a tree. During the fire at Miss Maudie’s house which happened in the winter time, Boo secretly gave scout a blanket to help keep her warm. It was near the end of the story that boo delivered the greatest act of bravery. He stepped in to protect both scout and Jem against the attack from Mr. Ewell. Even though Boo did not talk, his actions spoke loudly. As a true friend to Scout and Jem, he offered them not only tokens but also his very life to protect
