His honesty with his children means they trust him and look up to him for guidance. He tells Jack his younger brother that when a child asks you something, “...answer him, for goodness sake.” When Scout asks Atticus if they are poor, the usual response from a parent of a lawyer profession would be to say no, so as not to feel lower than the Cunningham. But Atticus believes honesty is the best policy, so he says, “we are indeed.” Atticus considers lying horribly dishonest, so he attempts to be truthful at all times with his children. He doesn’t expect his kids to respect him just because of his profession or he is their father but only because he acts in way that deserves respect. As Dennet mentions in the text, deception is done so by animals in their nature to distract their predator away from their territories or families, and he provides the example of the ground-nesting bird luring away it’s predator by acting that it’s wing is broken (pg. 91). Dennet believes that as humans, we engage in “intentional” activities as it is habitual for not only us humans, but for animals as well. Referring back to the ground-nesting bird, Dennet also mentions that deception feels more like a panic attack to animals, and that they do not really have a reason to act that way; It is an instinct for them to do so (pg. 92). Not only does the bird identify that it is in some form of danger, or that it’s children are in danger, but it also…

In the book Jean Louise’s conscience was her dad’s conscience and that was one of the main points of the story. Also in the book it is revealed that Atticus doesn’t have a perfect conscience in Go Set a Watchman as he did in To Kill a Mockingbird. I have always been a firm believer that you should not tell children difficult things, as they might not be able to handle it well; however, Atticus really challenged that thought when he told his brother, “When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness’ sake...evasion simply muddles ‘em” (116). Atticus in this quote completely changes my opinion on my earlier view, as he shows that they can get it and they know better than adults when you 're lying to them. In this simple quote Atticus completely changed my view on this matter, as it caused me to recall when my parents had made simple lies to me for no apparent reason other than because they thought I could not handle or understand such…
