Examples Of Assimilation Of American Culture

Transmission of culture happens when culture is learned by or taught to someone. A parent teaching their child the way the speak or behave, a grandparent telling their grandchildren stories of ancestors. These are all examples of enculturation. Acculturation is when a person learns the ways of a culture other than their own. For example, a person visits Spain for a month, that person will observe the way Spaniards eat, speak, and live their everyday lives; therefore, learning the ways of the Spanish culture. Assimilation is when another culture becomes part of a person’s native culture, they adopt habits of another culture. Maybe that person from before moves to Spain, they will eventually develop habits, pick up on the way Spaniards do things, overtime this person will experience assimilation.

Before Ian and Toula met, Toula experienced assimilation. Her family is native to Greece and they moved to North America. Over the years they picked up several different habits that Americans had, from the way the spoke to the way they walked. Toula attended Greek school, she was taught how to ‘live Greek’, meaning she learned how to speak and write in Greek, and she learned all about her native culture. Culture may be a set of beliefs a family has, a set of values, and a way of living. It can also include the behavior one ‘should’ have, defined by the ancestors of that person. From success to religion to the person the daughter should marry, this is all defined by parents and ancestors.
