A young vivacious pig named Snowball stated, “War is war. The only good human being is a dead one” (Orwell 43). In George Orwell’s allegorical novel, Animal Farm, hatred towards all humans, also known as those who consume and do not produce, is shared between almost all animals and is a key point in the idea of Animalism. The concept of Animalism, the representation of Communism in the book, begins with the teachings of Old Major, the prized show pig, who passed away in the beginning of the novel. Old Major leaves the rest of the animals with an idea that the animals are better off without the consumer-centric humans. One example of this is displayed when the farm animals begin to question where the milk had disappeared to, eventually through curiosity they conclude the pigs are using the milk. In order to prevent the animals from further questioning the milk situation, Napoleon dispatches Squealer to offer an explanation, “‘Milk and apples (this has been proved by science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig’” (Orwell 35). Ever since Jones got kicked off the farm, the animals envisioned freedom, equality, and sharing between all animals on the farm. However, this begins to fade as the pigs use their superior intellect to their advantage, convincing all the other animals of anything they pleased through the power of persuasion. In addition, the animals’ illiteracy factors into the their overall lack of education. Soon after the seven commandments were concocted, the pigs move into the farmhouse. Clover, a motherly mare, believes this goes against one of the commandments. Clover, with help from Muriel, who had been known to read scraps of newspaper in the evening, both conclude that the fourth commandment reads, “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”(Orwell 67). However, ‘with sheets’ was never at the end of the fourth commandment. Since the animals never grasped the ability to read original commandments, they do not recognize this as a change.
