The Tragedy of Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare, describing how one man’s attempt to become the King of Scotland ends in foul play and death. The play is filled with murder, excitement, tragedy, and loyalty. Throughout the play, one of the central themes is ambition, which many of the characters possessed, leading them to actions they normally wouldn’t do. The ambitious nature of the characters will lead them to turn against each other and drive some into insanity, even committing murder. As previously stated, Macbeth proclaims, “I’ll fight, till my bones my flesh be hacked. Give me my armor.” (Act V, Scn iii, Line 32) Macbeth is declaring that he will fight Macduff even though Birnam Wood was marching onto Scotland which was a sign that he was about to meet his fate. Macduff soon tells Macbeth that he wasn’t born of a mother’s womb which reassures Macbeth that he is about to be damned to hell because that was the warning that the witches gave him. Within the story, another example of Lady Macbeth showing ambition comes from her statement, “Only lookup clear. To alter favor ever is to fear. Leave all the rest to me.” (Act 1, Scn v, Line 72) Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth that she will assist in the murder of King Duncan, and that she will handle all the rest that Macbeth is concerned about. She does not want Macbeth to become worried and back out of the murder. The examples given throughout the story have shown that The Tragedy of Macbeth was full of ambitious characters and events. They use ambition, determination, and power to get whatever they are striving to receive. With opposing strategies, some characters used foul play, while others were honest and successfully tried to bring back Scotland to its former glory.
