An allegory is a work of literature in which characters or events have both a literal and symbolic meaning. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a literary ballad by Coleridge contains several examples of moral lessons. Throughout the ballad the Albatross is portrayed as an omen. The crew experienced both good and bad situations, because of how they treated the Albatross. Also the water snakes symbolize the idea that nature should be appreciated. The Mariner glorifies the beauty of the water snakes, and is rewarded. Coleridge is expressing the theme that tampering with mother nature can bring about negative consequences.
