It then becomes the role of the viewers to collect all those different pieces of stories and stitch them together to make one coherent story or universe. He also defines his own theory of transmedia storytelling he calls “transmedia franchise” as the way “Stories that unfold across multiple media platforms, with each medium making distinctive contributions to our understanding of the world.” In this theory, the different stories in a universe needs to be read together in order to create a full and coherent story although the stories can be understood separately. However, another media specialist, Siobhan O’Flynn, gives another definition of the transmedia storytelling. She argues that with the use of media platform, the story must have “an integrated, interconnected narrative whole, though they are encountered separately.” In that sense, media are not used for creating the world around a story, but to tell the story through different media. Indeed, the story is not complete: it works like a puzzle where the pieces are spread across multiple media. In the end we can say there are two different types of transmedia storytelling, the first one based on Jenkins theory suggesting that there are several stories in different media and that all them are connected to a single story universe. The second type of transmedia described in O’Flynn’s theory where the different …show more content…
The aim of Jenkins’ theory of the transmedia is to explode a narrative into parts which are displayed on different media platforms in order for the audiences to reconstruct a full story. All of the pieces of the narrative have to provide new elements such as back stories for the characters or characters development in order to offer a complete universe for the audience. By exploring all the platforms qualities, the producers of a story are able to provide complementary information on the characters, the plots and the relationships between the characters. Jenkins’ strategy of the expanding narrative universe is often used in TV shows because it allows producers and the channel to make a show known to the audience before its premier. It can also be used to maintain the audience and the fans between the seasons or the episodes. This strategy revolves around a strong main medium which has its own storyline, universe and characters and the producers expand the narration of the show onto multiple media
