Participants and Settings
Only one participant was chosen for this study, a 23-year-old Hispanic male name Joe. Joe took interest in this study, after reading a flyer posted at his local gym. The flyer asked for any young, active, male, who is seriously seeking help to quit smoking. Participant cannot live with anyone else that smokes, and must complete the study to receive compensation. Joe met each of the included criteria. He also consented to using the voucher system, since he had no success with past methods. As a participant, Joe will earn vouchers for smoking less or not smoking at all. This study included three different “high risk” locations; the participant’s job, bars/restaurants, and participant’s home. A structured observation was provided for locations outside the participant’s home. Sessions were held on Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Pre-Experimental Procedures
Prior to participating in the study, the participant met with the experimenter for identification, an initial orientation session, and to complete the informed consent form that listed all study procedures (including compensation). The CO readings were recorded in parts per million by a series of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the front panel of the monitor. For security purposes, a computer-tracking device was installed in the laptop. Research staff set up all the equipment and explained the monitoring procedure. A photocopy of the participant’s driver’s license was scanned, and an acknowledgment of receiving property was signed as consent for returning all equipment back to the university.

Inadequacy of quantitative approaches to research led to the development of a separate field known as the qualitative approach to research. Such methods attempted to present the data from the perspective of the subjects on the observed groups so that the cultural and intellectual biases of the researcher would not distort the collection, presentation and analysis of the data (Alwright, 1988). It has increasingly been integrated into SLA research in recent years, its ultimate goal being to discover and to understand those phenomena from the perspective of participants in the activity. Long (1983) introduced non-participant observation (in contrast with participant observation introduced by Bailey, 1983) in which the investigator observes and…
