My Definition Of A Good Leader

Improved Essays
At the beginning of this half-semester class, we were asked what we thought the best definition of leadership was. My answer was as follows, “A person that has the best interest of the group/person in mind. To help others.” As I look back on this statement I quickly have realized what I have learned when it comes to being leader. You can either be a good leader or a great leader. I want to even extend past what a great leader is and become the best leader. I feel that this class helped me tremendously with figuring out what I need to do to be the best leader.

There were many books that we read this semester from Building the Bridge, to the Emotional Intelligence article, The Servant, Faith and Leadership, the book of Genesis, and Finding

This was a book that really intrigued me the most and I think the one that left the most impact on me. After reading it I had so much respect for the main character that would give up everything, making tons of money, to go to a monastery and live as a monk. That honestly just baffled me. It baffled me in such a to motivate me to become a better leader. I feel that through this book he showed what true leadership was really about. He laid everything on the line to better others and help equip others to become the best leaders possible. To take the time to sit down and patiently deal with all the different types of characters that came along into his path is something that takes great courage. I learned a lot about leadership through this book.

One other text that I thoroughly enjoyed was the chapter in Genesis and the story of Joseph. This story I have read many of times and is a story that I have taken a lot from, but I have never read it in such a way to gain any leaderships skills from. When reading it from this approach I actually learned a lot from

Not saying that what I had was not what a leader was, but it was not enough. I don’t know if there are ever enough words to describe a true leader, but to sum up what a leader is in my book are these 10 words; Awareness, Decisiveness, Empathy, Accountability, Confidence, Optimism, Honesty, Focus, Inspiration, and most importantly, Faith. Leadership is more than power and prestige. Many leaders lead with power, but through this course I quickly realized that will only last for a short season. The best type of leadership is leading with authority. There is a huge difference when it comes to leading with power versus authority. Power is the leadership of fear and being forceful with the leadership. People follow because they are afraid of their leader. With authority, a leader has gained respect from those underneath them and people want to follow them because they have gained their respect. This is an aspect of leadership that I can’t say that I have ever used or even heard of. After learning of this I can see how this has been in effect in my life. I am not in a position of power. I do not have people that work for me but I do meet with many people and I try to help out people in different ways. I believe that I have been able to do this because I have earned people’s respect and I have built a level of trust with everyone that I have been able to work

True leadership is represented by standing up for the greater good of a group without selfishness and ignorance towards others. The story The Lord of The Flies by William Golding demonstrates a constant struggle for power and leadership between Jack, Piggy, and Ralph. The malicious actions that result draw out specific aspects of leadership from each boy. Apart from Jack and his aggressive attitude toward others or Piggy with the lack of respect he receives from the others, Ralph 's rational thinking is the trait, that as a leader, trumps the others and clearly shows how his endless efforts for the greater good of the boys make him the distinct leader.…

Servant Leadership I was reading from Oswald Chambers as a small part of my devotional hour recently and read the following which just leaped off the page at me. John 13:13 Ye call Me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am The curious thing about Our Lord is that He never insists on our obedience. When we begin to usurp authority and say “You must” and “you shall” it is a sure sign that we are out of touch with the supreme Authority.…

The aim of this paper is to take the teachings, experiences, learnings and knowledge gained throughout my experiences during the 2015 Haskayne wilderness retreat (retreat), and apply them to uncover the foundations required to become a leader and what is required of a responsible leader in the context of sustainability in today’s business environment. Furthermore, I will offer my opinions on the key leadership take a ways I learnt while on the retreat, and how these lessons can be operationalized and put into practice personally and professionally. Throughout the week at the retreat I came to a realization that in order to be a leader, oneself must inherently be a leader themselves. A leader can do so in its simplest form by being completely…

The Servant by James C. Hunter provides a foundation and an understanding of true leadership. Through the lives of John Daily and five other struggling leaders on a retreat, Hunter uses Brother Simeon to explain the principles of servant leadership, which causes John and the others to reflect deeply on their character, trust, and commitment. Creating and deepening the principles described by Brother Simeon will enhance one’s leadership perspective and will prove to be beneficial for a school principal. “Leadership is the skill of influencing people to work enthusiastically toward goals identified as being for the common good” (Hunter, 2012, p 28). To influence people, you must build authority, which is done when you identify and meet the…

Leadership on the line by Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linksys is a very timely book. Maggie’s description of her Indian community and the effects of alcohol made me think of many urban communities and the pain that lurks in those communities. The stories she shares about Lois and the heart she had for her community and desire to make it better make you think we need more leaders like that. Lois leadership inspired me because she saw something wrong in her community she believed she could bring change. Lois is a good picture of servanthood she doesn’t sit and think someone should so something…

There is not one set definition of what a leader is, there are generalizations for a set definition but a leader means different things for every person on this Earth. Leadership can be exhibited in various ways. Learning to be a leader takes many years of experience and is always a learning process. The main idea of the book I choose the book “Act like a leader, think like a leader, by Herminia Ibarra, which is inspirational read for everyone who has a passion for leading. Ibarra, redefines the traditional leadership notion of “think first, and then act’’ by acting first and then thinking. She described The “Outsight Principle” which is the mine idea of this book. Through the implementation of the “outsight principle”, Ibarra believes that one can improve or develop into an effective leader. This principle attests that the only way to think like a leader is to first act it out and that is to come out of ones’ comfort zone by start doing changes and more experiences.…

The four pillars of NHS, service, scholarship, leadership, and character, mean a lot to me. Some of them relate to me more than others, but all play a huge part in NHS. I also see a leader as someone who is as someone who can change plans quickly, is the situation calls for it. Life does not always go as planned, so a good leader should be to shift gears and have another plan. For a leader to be effective, they must be in touch with reality. Cronon (1998) believes that a liberally educated student should practice self-criticism. Nobody is perfect and a good leader should realize that because nobody is perfect.…
