I initially studied music in primary and middle school, playing trumpet and percussion in jazz band and orchestra. Music ended up being the vehicle for me to attend and eventually graduate from Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan.
By this time, I started shifting focus to the visual and liberal arts and was accepted to the Visual Arts department. This was an early opportunity to explore many fine arts disciplines. And explore I did. These included painting, figure drawing, metal smithing, ceramics, photography, and printmaking. A little over two years later, I landed a job as an editors’ assistant at Editel/Los Angeles in 1992. This is where I witnessed the VFX hardware Quantel Harry, and soon after Quantel Henry, in action, for the first time.
In 1994, Editel built its first of three Discreet Logic Flame suites. I was the technical assistant to both systems in a rapidly expanding graphics and effects department. My duties also included shooting products, flat art, slides, and transparencies with a freestanding broadcast video camera and an IMC motion control stand.
By 1995, and on through 1999 I was compositing visual effects in all formats (commercial, episodic, music video, short film, feature film), running both Quantel Henry and Discreet Logic Flame platforms with fluency. When Editel closed its doors in May 1999, I dived head first into the freelance market. Since then I have worked primarily on Flame software for a variety of design, editorial, finishing, and feature effects houses in both lead and support capacities (please see work experience).
