The history and transition of sacrifice from commonplace existence to specific usage in minorities is understood. One last concept to consider is how a modern society establishes and enforces its laws without the fear of angering a divinity that was discussed in the preceding paragraph. As stated, the lack of fear humanity has for each other makes execution of laws much more complicated. Fear is one way the government seeks to keep violence and crime to a minimum. Prison, monetary retribution, and death penalties are the main implements to keep the country stable. These methods seem fair, but they do contain pitfalls. Those who are unafraid of the legal system have no reason not to commit a crime. The death penalty is rare enough that many people do not feel threatened by it as they should. In comparison, the ways gods punished their subjects related to torture, slavery, and of course, death. All of these concepts may seem familiar as some of the most protested in contemporary society. Without the insurance of these extreme consequences, perpetrators are nearly free to do as they please. Law enforcement is constantly searching for law breakers and criminals that commit these crimes in order to have them prosecuted as soon as possible. This, once again, is partially why sacrifice is so rare today. Many of the societies that have not removed sacrifice from their culture, are extremely illegal and therefore hiding from our government.
