Thirty miles east of California’s State Capitol lies a unique town called Rocklin. This small town which was originally known as “Secret Ravine” originated in 1860, with a population of 440 and is recognized throughout history for its rock quarries and railroads. Rocklin built its first city jail in the middle of the 1880’s, and was crafted of granite, with a small steel window and door. Each night a watchman patrolled the streets and approximately every evening at 8:00pm a curfew bell would ring, warning all vagrants to leave town and notify children to get home. For Example, Rocklin PD interconnects with the public through social media websites such as Facebook, and Twitter. They are proactive in seeking the communities help to prevent and solve crimes by the way of daily posts; for instance, posts may include Rocklin’s weekly crime report, the most wanted fugitive, or perhaps a picture of a lost dog who desperately needs to reunite with its family. Additionally, there are daily posts of resources to manage current and changing needs of residents, business owners and visitors. In addition to social media, Rocklin police department has their own app. This app informs citizens about the latest news in Rocklin and surrounding areas, as well upcoming events such as a meet and greet called Lemonade with the Law. The Rocklin PD app is easy for citizens to navigate and supplies them with ample information. Another great app is called Next Door. This app allows citizens to subscribe to their specific region in which they live, in turn the app becomes a neighborhood watch program where people in their area can post and stay connected regarding activities in their neighborhood. The department provides a school resource officer at each high school and at Sierra College’s main campus. The school resource officer is a liaison between schools, the district and the police department. Having an officer present on a campus, helps deter crime, in addition, to building relationships between students, staff and law enforcement. By the same token, several times a year at community events the department will provide free child identification kits for parents. Rocklin PD Volunteers will record the child’s personal information, take a photo, get their fingerprints, as well as a DNA sample. This service is tremendously important, because time is crucial if a child is abducted; therefore, having this information readily available for law enforcement will expedite the search and recovery operation. Another great event that the department participates in, is the National Night out. This is a nationwide event that helps build up the community spirit and unity among the residents and law enforcement. Neighborhood watch groups host the event in their specific area. It is a huge block party, and members of the police, and fire departments visit as many neighborhoods as they can, getting to know and connect with as many residents as possible in one
