Psychiatry is a career I have been interested in for some time. “Psychiatrists are mental health professionals and licensed medical doctors who provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders” (Miller, n.d.). I for one am extremely interested in specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), childhood behavioral issues and depression. Presently, I work at the ReHabilitation Center which centers its program around helping people with emotional, cognitive and behavioral issues. My job as a ‘skill builder/respite provider’ has allowed me to gain a lot of insight towards the population I would like to eventually work towards. This job entails working mostly with adolescents who have an emotional or behavioral health disorder. My position summary as stated on our website is to: “Assist children with mental health concerns develop skills needed to live successfully in their homes and communities. Also, provide temporary relief to families from their care-giving responsibilities” (The ReHabilitation Center, n.d.). This involves students working under psychiatrists on patients in a clinical or hospital setting. This supervision will further enhance the student’s medical knowledge and training before becoming licensed on their own. When applying, it is crucial to state your specializations as it will later gain you real-life knowledge on the areas you are most interested. The next step in this process is to then take the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (How to Become a Psychiatrist | Psychiatry Careers., n.d.). Cresswell (2016) claims, “you will need to complete a 4-year residency program with at least three of these years spent specifically in the practice of psychiatry” to begin this oral and written examination. This exam focuses on sciences, clinical and specialty areas of psychiatry, and the student’s ability to recognize how to handle life situations (Cresswell, 2016). After you have completed this exam you are then required to apply for board certification which basically just certifies you as a reliable psychiatrist. Because I have an interest in child/adolescent psychiatry this may also require some further training for certification (How to Become a Psychiatrist | Psychiatry Careers, n.d.). Though this is not where it ends! Psychiatrists are required
