Privilege The first form of privilege I benefit from is white privilege. Because of the skin I was born in, I will never have to worry about not being taken seriously in a professional setting based on my race. I will never have to worry about going into a convent store on my own and being followed or accused of stealing. I can speak my mind without being called racial slurs. I can go into any hair salon and every stylist will know how to cater to my hair type. I can speak the way everybody around me speaks without being called “uneducated”. When I am told America’s history I am taught people of my color made it what it is. I will not one day need to educate my children that some people will refuse to accept them because of their skin color. I can turn on the TV and see people of my race highly represented.
The second form of privilege I benefit from is middle class privilege. This is a privilege I will admit I have a hard time accepting. I believe this is a privilege that my family works very hard to attain, this wasn’t just something handed to us. But, currently, it is something I am fortunate enough to benefit from. A very close family member of mine identifies as bisexual and has mostly dated girls. I’ve watched as she has suffered persecution because of this. But, I can freely express my sexuality without being questioned on its genuineness, unlike her. I will never have to worry about losing a job if I express my sexuality. I will never have to worry about half of my family deciding to not show up to my wedding because my partner is the same sex as me. I will never have to worry about not having access to making health decisions on my partner’s half if they are seriously injured.
