Coming to America, my priorities were to go to school, get a job and send remittances to my siblings that were still in Kenya. I applied to numerous positions, but was not successful in getting employment. After three months, I got two part-time job offers. One was a sales associate position at a retail store, and the other was a mentor position at an after-school program. The sales associate position was a weekend position with a better pay. In the after-school program, I had to work during the week. Both positions were almost an hour away from home. I decided to be a mentor. It was my interaction with the students and their parents at the after-school program that I learned about the poor access to health services within the Somali community.

It couldn’t have been past 10 a.m. when the alarm went off. We all knew what it meant- we were firefighters, it’s what we do. The fire chief told us that an apartment complex in downtown Boston had gone ablaze, and that it was really bad. We quickly got into our uniforms and hopped on as the fire truck left the station. We were a few miles away before I saw the smoke, a dark giant against the bright blue sky.…

I come from a family of seven with me being the fourth out of five kids. I was always the shy kid in school, so I did not stand out in my classes as much as the other kids. The only thing that set me apart from my classmates and siblings was my grades. Getting straight A’s practically my entire life had made me the go-to person for homework help. Throughout middle school and high school, my younger sister would always get sick with migraines.…

Time stands still, frozen like New York in the wintertime. And all I can hear is the fast da dum da dum of my palpitating heart. Adrenaline spikes in waves through my clammy body. I look straight at the brown wooden door in front of me and pretend it is the audience. Taking a deep breath of the musky air, I envision myself bold and confident.…

Once again this was an amazing experience. Not as easy as I thought I would be, but still particularly pleasant. I really enjoyed describing the little-things-gone-unnoticed and call upon my reader’s senses. As a matter of fact, that is my favorite writing style but I never thought it took that much. I woke up, payed attention to the sounds around me…

The sun was shining, there was a slight breeze, I could hear the leaves rustling on the ground. It was the perfect day out today and anyone could tell. I close my eyes and just listen to the beautiful sounds of nature, wondering what all the birds were saying. Sometimes I think like that, just wondering the unknowable, I guess that’s something about me not many people know. I can hear soft footsteps but I don’t open my eyes, only shift my mouth into a small smirk.…
