Due to my religion, same as hundreds of thousands of other Baha’is in Iran, I wasn’t able to continue my education after high school. Although my grades have always been above class average, as I knew I would never be allowed to receive higher education, I never had the privilege to dream about my future profession. My parents both had received higher education, but after the revolution they were not allowed to work in the fields they have studied in. However, they were not turned down by the turn in fate. They have built a life to serve the people around them and encouraged me to follow their path.

I tried public services, teaching in children’s classes, and mentoring youth groups for social activities. But finally I realized only through education I could enrich my life to serve the others. Finally, I decided to leave Iran and move to another country to

I want to use the knowledge gained at Cottey as a seed for me to bloom where I am planted. I am a first-generation immigrant from the Philippines and a daughter of a Housekeeper and a Laundry worker from an island in the middle of the Pacific ocean, Maui. The sun was shining, there was a slight breeze, I could hear the leaves rustling on the ground. It was the perfect day out today and anyone could tell. I close my eyes and just listen to the beautiful sounds of nature, wondering what all the birds were saying. Sometimes I think like that, just wondering the unknowable, I guess that’s something about me not many people know. I can hear soft footsteps but I don’t open my eyes, only shift my mouth into a small smirk.…

When I woke up from my sleep I realized that everything around me was white. My clothes, the bed, the walls, and the floors were all the same bland shade of white. I can’t remember a thing and I feel as though I am empty inside. All I hear is the sound of my own breath and my heart pounding in my chest. I slide my legs off the bed and my bare feet touch the cold, sanitized floors.…

When growing up, just about every child has some grandiose yet profoundly naïve dream for themselves, be it an astronaut, cowboy, the president, or even the regional manager of a gas station. I, of course, was no exception to this rule; much to my mother’s disappointment, my dream was to be a rock star. The idea of being on stage wowing crowds of people thrilled me immensely; however, even as a child, I understood this dream of mine to be incredibly unlikely, which made my moment of playing a shredding bass solo in front of an astonishing crowd of no more than thirty people all the more monumental. This dream remained dormant until 3 friends and I decided to form a band when we were in middle school.…
