My junior year of high school was a difficult time for my family. My older brother was in a state of crisis, causing my world to change significantly in what seemed to be a short amount of time. I went from focusing on my education, friends, and sports to spending nights worrying about his wellbeing. I became a girl who seemed unfamiliar to my loved ones. My father, a man who consistently overcomes odds, was steadfast in his conviction that these hardships would provide growth for our family. At the time, I saw this as an empty promise, one unworthy of my faith. However, a feeling of determination gradually grew inside me, and I began to look beyond the situation to which I once felt hostage. I made it my objective to not obsess over obstacles, but rather to take them in stride. With this …show more content…
With a group of fellow student leaders, I traveled abroad to Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales to broaden my understanding of different cultures and traditions. In the span of a month, the countries’ cultures were exposed to me through lectures, a home stay in Ireland, dancing lessons, museums, schools, landmarks, new cuisine, music, and an invitation to Parliament. Throughout these experiences, our supervisors supported the growth of our ambassadorial skills until we were capable of assisting one another on appropriate behaviors. One meal consisted of haggis, where we reminded one another to eat it politely while in the presence of Scottish citizens. In Ireland, I was reminded by a peer to walk on the correct side of the path so as to not be a disruption. It was during these simple moments that I developed a genuine understanding of what it meant to assimilate into a different culture. As I cascaded from a building in Scotland, I reflected on my trip and was thankful for my courage that granted me a remarkable experience to bring
