My story begins in the city of San Diego more exclusively City Heights. This neighborhood thrives in diversity which exposed me to a variety of lifestyles. As I lived in two neighborhoods I noticed the clear contrast between high and low income neighborhoods. I have lived in a community that hosts monthly block parties and also one where you are always aware of your surroundings. The schools would either be filled with kids who didn't take anything seriously or kids who didn't think school would do anything for them. Showing up to class everyday with that atmosphere around me made me realize some people didn't think they could make it out of the ghetto as most call it. My first year of high school, I was reserved and I lacked confidence in voicing my opinion in class. That first year was crucial to expand my comfort zone for the future. Little did I know I would soon form a bond so close to staff and students that school would feel like a second home. Sophomore and Junior year is where I became involved in clubs and sports. They came to the United States to give my sister and me a chance to pursue a better life and education. My family’s financial status fluctuated throughout my childhood making it difficult to spend on anything apart from the necessities. Because we struggled with money, arguments only seemed to increase over the years. Until we lost our home and moved in with my aunt, we didn’t realize how distant we became with each other as if we were all strangers living together. This challenge caused us to see the good, the bad, and the ugly of our family. My mom would pray and tell us day in and day out, “We are together and that is all that matters, material things come and go but things will get better.” I want to make her proud and fulfill her dreams of seeing at least one of her children go to a
