This din’t faze me, I never got cut from any team, I never the anguish and failure that many people have to deal with. My sports career remained a clean sheet, every time I tried out I would make the team. This was the first year I could try out for a competitive basketball team, I came into the tryout overwrought. I had a lot of confidence and anxiety, I believed that it was inargueable that I would make the basketball team. I was planning on this season as one of the most exhilarating seasons of my career.

Although I was doing well there is one moment I did become very stressed. On the second day I overheard some of my competition discussing their work ethic. The players had practiced for multiple summers in advance, I was on edge, all I remembered doing was sitting on the couch playing Xbox and playing soccer. I felt apprehensive about this, the idea of preparing was not apparent to me. Why should I waste my time with such a useless and forgettable task, and at that moment I began to worry that I was overconfident and cocky. I questioned all my decisions, I became worried, but I never considered failing. I thought “Maybe I’ll sit bench or play JV.” The last day came at us like a truck, day three of tryout was the day everyone hoped for and dreaded at the same time, everyone was broken-down. By the end of day three sweat dripped off people by the gallon. Only the top

It was frustrating to put so much effort and time into something without seeing the results that I wanted. Before every game I would be in the gym shooting baskets until the official warm-ups actually started, and I was at every practice, never giving up, but it just never seemed to be enough. That is, until my junior year, when things finally began to click in my mind. I could fully understand the plays and see when they should be used and why, I became one of the strongest defensive players on the team, and I could even shoot some three-pointers every…

The summer going into my junior year, I tried out for the summer baseball team. However, although I had never anticipated there would be a problem with my talent levels, considering I had played freshman and sophomore year, I did not make the roster. I was devastated. In the eight years of my baseball career, this was by far the lowest of lows. When faced with adversity and defeat many people decide to give up and quit.…

During those times I realized that I am built for this. It was during the hard times that I thought about all of my failures in life. All the times I missed notes, missed baskets, or didn’t hit the ball over the net. More importantly I thought about my intentionality and purpose during those moments I realized that all of the little lessons I learned while participating in all of these activities would add up and lead to greater opportunities. Opportunities to improve, to learn, to grow, but more importantly to become a better person.…

After the first day of tryouts, I wasn’t satisfied and knew that I should have had a higher quality performance. I knew I did good enough to make first cuts, but what I was worried about was the guys who did better than me. I thought that there was no way I could catch up to them, despite the reality that they were nervous and weren’t on their A game either. I was distracted in class that day. I was too worried about tryouts and I was freaking out about how I did and how other guys did.…

I had worked during the off season to show the coaches that I was willing to put in the work needed to make the team. Try outs had finally come, such a surprise that brand new faces had shown up for this day, while a few were with me weeks before this day grinding it out. With no surprise these people had not made the team. I was part of the basketball team and this gave me the boost of…

I remove my glasses to wipe the thick sweat from my brow. In this small court right now, it is just me, and my opponent. I stare him down as I bounce the green tennis ball on the ground in preparation for a serve. We have been in this match for more than an hour, and the current score is eight to six with him leading. Among the others, this match is probably the longest with a marathon of repeated deuces.…

As a child, I never quite understood “magic” in a supernatural sense; nevertheless, my budding mind would naturally cherish experiences that could remove me from my everyday existence and present me with something enchanting – something new. I would associate such experiences with what I perceived as magic, and I realized that with magic comes a magician that compels dreaming and ignites one’s imagination. When I was a toddler, my family and I frequented the Lewis A. Ray library of Smyrna so that I could temporarily satisfy my insatiable craving for knowledge. We all know failure is inevitable, but often leaves us feeling discouraged or insecure. My sophomore year I decided I wanted to try out for the Lewisburg High dance team. It all hurt, but I could never forgive what they said about me. My other coach from middle school, had decided to put me into the game. I was so excited my adrenaline was rushing. Time comes for me to return to tryouts and I do, and due to my hard work and determination I made the team. Another season passes, except this time we make it to the second round of playoffs! I also leave the season with an award for most improved player and eagerness for the next season. It’s now junior year and the team has lost four of it’s starting seniors, our coach is worried for the fate of the team and that this season may be mainly rebuilding, but little did he know that we would be successful in making it to the second round of playoffs once again with the same record as the past season. As the only junior on the team I was successful in becoming the team’s starting center even though I am 5’5”.…
