Several years ago, my younger brother Cooper accomplished a great feat. I was there when he reached this triumph. I screamed and cheered for him as loud as I possibly could. He was eight at the time and I was eleven. I stood beside the mat, recording my brother wrestling in the state championships.

We had a long time to wait until his final match, so my mom and I went to a few stores to kill some time. My mom was talking to me and I could tell that she didn’t think that he could win. He was going to wrestle Cade Bacon. We had seen him wrestle before and he was very skilled and very talented. I never lost faith in my brother’s abilities though. I knew that he could do it. Yet another exponential area of growth I recognized internally was my performance in wrestling. During my first two years I found myself distracted by such little things and I would constantly criticize myself which held a looming sense of negativity which showed immensely in my performance. An epiphany sprouted through my conscious like a flower pressing itself through the jaded rocks and I couldn't be more grateful for this to happen at such a difficult time. Luna McKee 1201-34 Richel Burkley-Harris Narrative Essay Sydney and I haven’t always been the closest of sisters. While there were moments of solidarity between us, they were few and far between, and we spent the majority of our childhoods scorning each other. I was born six years after her in 1995, to a different father (one who wasn’t kind to either of us, but especially not to her); and that fact alone caused our complaints of “she’s not my real sister” to bellow through the house. Now, I’ve always sort of idolized Sydney; she was stubborn, strong, and never backed down from anything; she was the type of sibling who would meet a school bully in the back of an elementary school playground and beat them down the rusty red slide, had she found…
