I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

Moving forward: Growing up was challenging, to say the least. I always felt like an outsider in the home and was treated differently from all the other kids in the family. My mother treated me more like a servant than a child and never showed me any kind of parental love or nurturing. In fact, even as a small child, I knew that I was not loved by her which was an extreme burden to bear.…

Growing up as an only child to a single parent who worked two jobs to pay the bills taught me a great deal about life. I was not only taught to work hard, but also to be dedicated to by my goals. I saw the injustices of life in ways other children were sheltered from. I remember how difficult it was for my mother to work 16 hours and still provide a home cooked dinner for me, and during that dinner listen to how my day was spent. There were even some days she had to take me to work with her at the nursing home.…

Despite the fact that I have faced challenges with the subject as of late, I would consider English to be one of my favorites. During my junior year, I was enrolled in AP English Language and Composition, and although it was the only class I did not receive an A grade in, it, without a doubt, altered how I perceive the world. English did not only improve my writing and analytical skills, but it also prepared me for life beyond my education. Being an AP class, the curriculum was designed to help me get the best score that I could on the AP test. Almost every class period, a discussion would be held regarding a specific topic, typically related to the unit we were focusing on at the time.…

One of the most fundamental needs that we have as humans is the strive to find our own identity. Identity is extremely important for the middle childhood and later adolescence stages in life, but the identity aspects from those stages stem from an earlier age. The initial development of identity along with the importance of preoperational thinking, autonomy, language development, elaboration of locomotion, fantasy play, imitation, and self control is why toddlerhood is the most important psychosocial crisis stage. As children start to progress from infancy to the ages of 2-4 years, they will begin to recognize themselves as a separate entity from their mothers. Toddlers will start to portray more autonomous features, causing them to use their locomotor…

Personal Statement Throughout the past year of studying biology at A level, I have become increasingly interested in it. I am fascinated by how complex the human body is and how it works in health and disease. These diseases occur in numerous ways and by studying physiology we can see where normal bodily procedures go wrong and can lead to the development of conditions such as diabetes, asthma or cystic fibrosis. Learning more about these diseases can in turn lead us to finding treatment or cures and hopefully create a better life for future populations.…

Socio-autobiography There is no society where gender is considered to be insignificant. China is one such society where gender roles and inequalities have developed over time and remain present today. As I have spent the majority of my life in New Zealand, I have been exposed to many Western perspectives on gender. However, being the first generation to grow up in New Zealand meant that many traditional Chinese views on gender norms were still incorporated into my upbringing. This socio-autobiography will explore sociological gender concepts across time and cultures, and how they have shaped my life.…

When people ask me to describe myself, I always draw a blank, I never know what to say, I’m caught off guard because I don’t really love talking about myself too often because I am someone who likes to listen rather than to talk. I always have to think about what I should say to make a good impression on whomever is asking me the question. There is a lot about me that you can see by just looking at me; I have short brunette hair, I’m short, hazel eyes, I’m quiet, and more. However, there are certain personality traits about me that every single person I know on a personal basis can tell you; I am candid, I am shy, and I am very loving. I am candid and by candid, I mean I am always very truthful and frank.…

I believe one of the most frustrating times in my life was learning to deal with my older brother, Mack, and how others treated him versus me. Truly I did not understand why years made us so different. To me two years was really nothing in the grand scheme of things, but growing up adults seemed to see it much more differently, specifically our grandparents. During the summers we would visit them Mack and I would take to doing odd jobs to earn a little spending money. Due to my brother being older and therefore more able to do jobs he tended to get the harder work than I.…
