Example Of Nursing Philosophy

My nursing philosophy is to do no harm when treating patients. It is my job to provide the best care possible; beginning with my first encounter with a patient. I treat every patient in the same manner and make sure their needs and concerns are always being heard and not to dismiss them. The patient is in a new place and for some it is scary to be vulnerable and put trust in someone else. I am there to put them at ease, hold their hand and provide comfort anyway I can. It is my duty as the nurse to follow doctor’s orders when caring for patients, but also to advocate for them at the same time. In doing so, I always look out for the well-being of the patient and hope for the best clinical outcome. It is my job to help them achieve ideal

Nursing is about making others feel comfortable, safe, and satisfied. Like I mentioned before, patient centered care is all about the relationship between the patient and the health care provider with the goal of enhancing the wellbeing of the patient (Boykins, 2014). The main priority of nurses is to improve the health of the patient. To achieve this, the nurse must first build a good relationship with the patient, establish trust, and build confidence. In other words, nursing practice is all about centering their care on the patient and improving the patient’s emotional and physical state.…

I believe that getting to know the patient’s background and history, and showing the patient that you want to learn about them and their preferences proves that you are compassionate in your care. It will make the patient feel safer and will allow them to open up and tell you things that might be crucial to their care that they may have otherwise kept to themselves because they weren’t comfortable.…

I believe that nursing has developed from being a low wage, low respected and unskilled job to a legitimate, scientific profession. History has shown us that nurses have had to fight to get the respect they deserved from other medical professions and dispel the stereotype. Unfortunately, this fight continues to this day. History has also told us that the job of the nurse was to basically keep the patient clean, feed, bathe, and take the patient outside for some fresh air, no questions asked. To a degree, the actual cares for our patients has not changed, however now we DO ask questions.…

Nursing goes beyond caring for a patient during their illness and managing their disease process. Nursing includes adapting to a patient’s and their family’s physical, social, spiritual, environmental and psychological needs. I believe in treating the whole patient and being supportive of the family’s needs as well. Shelly & Miller (2006) asserts “while critical thinking, decision making, and leadership skills are extremely important, the characteristics nurses need most are compassion, competence, faith, integrity and responsibility” (p. 291).…

Nurses are the closest to the patient and we should always advocate for the patient even when it goes against our opinion and beliefs. The amount of support is beneficial to the patient because they feel like someone is listening to their feelings and problems. Also as a nurse, we should report when we see a doctor or any other healthcare professionals is doing something to the patient that is not right such as giving an injection that the patient doesn’t want or making a diagnose that isn’t correct. We could lose our license if we don’t say anything about it. Therefore, good communication and being honest are important when being a nurse and taking care of a patient like this or any other types of…
