Simba with his flowing mane gazing upon the image of Mufasa painted in the clouds. This is the earliest Disney image carved in my mind. I spent hundreds of hours working on completing a massive jigsaw puzzle that my dad brought home from one of his travels. I remember how proud he was, and how accomplished I felt when I showed him the final result. Imagine my disappointment when a single piece went missing; Zazu’s beak. No matter what I did, I could not bring the beauty of the image back. Regardless, I continued to take it apart and reassemble it, time after time, mourning the loss, not of that piece, but the complete picture.
Twenty years later, I was still trying to figure out the jigsaw puzzle of life. After what seemed like a lifetime of dedication and hard work, I found myself in one of the best hospitals in Pakistan, as a novice intern tasked with taking care of extremely sick patients. Initially, I felt overwhelmed and inadequate, but with the help of my mentors, the high patient influx and diversity of cases allowed me to quickly gather confidence. I learned to rely on my clinical expertise with limited resources. Collaboration with the fellow house staff and a constant effort to respect my patient’s cultural and religious beliefs remain my most cherished experiences. I remember taking care

As a medical practitioner in a developing nation , I am acutely aware of the urgent need for competent primary care physicians and their role in the prevention, early detection and management of conditions which contribute to morbidity and mortality and which burden our limited healthcare resources. Upon graduation from medical school, as the recipient of a government scholarship, I undertook a period of obligatory employment in one of the major public hospitals in my country - first as an intern then as a junior house officer- rotating through almost every specialty offered at that institution. Those five years took me on a dizzying ride which acquainted me with the full spectrum of human emotions , from the euphoric highs to the depressing lows. At the end of it all, I reflected upon my service with great pride and a sense of accomplishment but feelings of frustration lurked beneath the surface. I thought about the patients I encountered over the years : the neonates in the HDU battling sepsis as a result of inadequate prenatal care, the renal failure patients who lined the corridors of the nephrology clinic awaiting their turn for hemodialysis , the diabetic amputees on the surgical wards who struggled to accept…

My life is rather very complicated. Of course, I know that I’m not the only one that lives like this, and that other people may have it much worse than I do. Whether its struggle with bills or all together as a family, I still try to do the very best I can. Although we have troubles, I don’t express my emotions of that matter, but rather be who I am, which is being happy and making every day possible. I’ve done community services with my church like going to nursing homes and feeding the people at the hospitality center.…
