For my last observation I went back to the McCarthy Center to view a group activity being done. I was observing in the quail’s room with the three year olds and they had just transitioned from outdoors to going back indoors. There were two workers that set up two different tables for the children to come up to and work together at. This hour was also their time to focus on directly on STEM, so one table focused around science and the other focused on engineering. At the science table, one worker was pouring white powder on top of bubble wrap and added water and paint for color and let the children mix it all up with their hands. The children got to watch everything mix together and change colors. The bubble wrap added texture for them to feel around with and allowed them to even pop the bubbles and let some paint fly around. Feeney, Moravcik, and Nolte say to, “Have an ‘attention grabber.’ Start group times with something that you know will capture the children’s interest” (p. 216). Before this group activity began, the children were also playing with the bubble wrap outside and the worker brought up painting on it once they went inside. That is what caught the children’s interest in …show more content…
They were also given a block with multiple wooden sticks glued to it so the sticks would stand up vertically. The children would pile the shapes onto the sticks and some would pile the shapes on randomly and some put a certain color or certain shape on each stick. This activity also helped them work on their fine motor skills by placing the small shapes onto the stick. The worker was very well organized when the children were brought over. Feeney, Moravcik, and Nolte say to “Have all your materials gathered and ready so that when you bring the children together they do not have to wait while you locate needed items” (p.

For my participant observation assignment, I chose to investigate the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in San Francisco. This year’s procession was held accordingly in the city’s famous Mission district on the twelfth of March. As I have attended in years past and am familiar with the humbug of the day, I anticipated an even grander turnout in honor of the big year. I chose to examine the festivities because in my years attending the parade I have been always been skeptical of the motives of the attendees because many seem to use the event as a platform to get belligerently drunk but do not actually acknowledge the cultural component. For this reason, I chose to expand my curiosity and brave the rainy parade as a participant-observer.…

Russell defines participant observation as getting close to people and becoming familiar with them to the point that your presence makes them feel comfortable enough to observe and record information about their lifestyles and patterns. As an intern that does not work full-time, I am a participant observer. As a participant observer: I am an insider that observes and records some aspects of life in the office. The line between observer and performer is not always clear especially after I have work in this site for around a year. At times it can feel as I am a complete participant because I perform the same tasks as my co-workers, but given my short hours and that I am student, I am not a complete participant and it does allow me to observe performances that could be invisible to my co-workers.…

It was a successful night for Mrs. O’ Keefe, Mrs. Schneider, and myself. Student Alliance members were welcoming families into the building and leading many of them in the direction of the classes they were scheduled to attend for their child. Each period was ten minutes long and parents had six minutes between the periods to get to their next class. As I stood out in the hallway between periods, I saw as parents were frantically trying to locate their next class. Luckily, I have been walking around the school to become familiar with the hallways and I helped parents by pointing them in the right direction.…

    3. How did the teacher relate the lesson to previous learning? How did the teacher relate the lesson to the backgrounds of the students (e.g. ethnicity, socioeconomic, etc.)? Mrs. Taylor did a tremendous job of relating this lesson to previous learning that the students have completed in her classroom over the last class period. When she was introducing the lesson, Mrs. Taylor made the lesson connect to the book that they had read in this class, The Three Little Pigs, and the structures that they had built in groups to protect the plastic pig inside of their structures.…
