What is grit? Grit to me seems like perseverance. The lady from the TED talk describe it as ‘sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.” So I would say that my definition of grit is a good definition for the term. So the next question is where does grit come from? Can it be taught or is it something a person is born with? After looking through articles on the subject and re-watching the TED talk I believe that it can possible for both to happen. I believe that grit is mainly something a person is born with, the reason I think this is because certain people just have more determination than others. I just think it is harder to teach this to students who don’t have as much determination as other students. So studies though have shown that grit through the right interventions can increase grit in students so that’s proof that this can be increase and isn’t just something someone is born with. So what does all this mean for education? Or rather how does it relate to education? I believe that since intelligence is the best known measureable trait today is awesome. I think what Duckworth said about being able to determine someone’s intelligence in minutes is crazy to even think about. But does intelligence have everything to do with how successful a student is in the classroom? I also agree with her when she states that intelligence leaves a lot unexplained.
