Pathos is a significant and powerful tool of persuasion in arguments. To illustrate, Clinton mentioned that when “I (Clinton) was the Secretary of State, we actually increased American exports globally.” This statement fruitfully appealed to the audience, because Clinton was able to created her credibility as an effective government official. She was able to project her success as a Secretary of State through the use of ethos. Another example of ethos in the presidential debate is Trump stating that “I (Trump) built this company that’s worth many billions of dollars, with some of the greatest assets in the world… and that’s the kind of thinking that our country needs.” By declaring that he turned a company into a multibillion dollar business with great assets, Trump was able to establish himself as a successful entrepreneur. He captures the audience attention by giving this report, because he was able to convince them of his hard- working character. Both Clinton and Trump effectively utilized ethos to persuade the audience of their unique
